HBO’s prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, has already started the casting process for its main cast members of Daenerys Targaryen’s royal ancestors.
The show will be a direct adaption of Thrones author George RR Martin’s quasi-historical fiction fantasy Fire and Blood, which tracks the Targaryen dynasty’s arrival in Westeros following the destruction of their homeland Valyria.
Viewers can expect the series to follow the same timeline as the book – which begins with the conquest of Westeros and ends with a massive inter-family civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
Now, Knife Edge Media has reported that a casting call has gone out to cast the three leads of the show – a trio of the Dragon Queen’s most fearsome ancestors.
The call features descriptions of three of the most famous figures in the Targaryen dynasty – siblings Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen.
In the lore of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, the Aegon in question is the first of his name, also called the Conqueror.
It was Aegon who invaded Westeros and, alongside his sisters, united the Seven Kingdoms and started the Targaryen Dynasty as we know it.
If you thought Drogon was big, wait until you see Balerion the Black Dread… (Picture: Rex/HBO)
Basically, if you liked Game of Thrones but thought it needed more political subterfuge, strong female characters (dragon-riding warrior princesses, anyone?) and incest (Aegon married both of his sisters – ew) we reckon the prequel will sort you out.
Also, if you thought Drogon was big – wait until you see Balerion the Black Dread, Aegon’s beat helped create the Iron Throne and his wing span was apparently as large as a whole town.
Let’s hope they’re saving on the budget.
